The Road to Sydney The 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Selection Process

January 21-23, 2000 Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials Qualifying Tournament Colorado Springs, Colorado
March 10-12, 2000 Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials Qualifying Tournament Colorado Springs, Colorado
May, 12-14, 2000 Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials Qualifying Tournament Colorado Springs, Colorado

Competition Weight Divisions: Women's Olympic Flyweight (Under 107.8 lbs.), Women's Olympic Welterweight (125.5 pounds to 147.4 lbs.), Men's Olympic Flyweight (Under 127.6 lbs.), Men's Olympic Featherweight (127.7 lbs. to 149.6 lbs.)

The XXVII Olympic Games will be held in Sydney, Australia, September 15 - October 1, 2000. Taekwondo Competition is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27 through Saturday, September 30, 2000.

In the 2000 Olympic Games, the sport of Taekwondo has been allotted a total of 100 competitor slots by the International Olympic Committee. Because of the limited slots available and in order to allow greater global participation in the Olympic Games, the World Taekwondo Federation has limited the Olympic competition to four weight divisions for men and four weight divisions for women. Due to the limited number of competitors, each country had the opportunity to qualify only two men and two women. Therefore, the maximum number of athletes that any country can have represent them is four.

In order for a country to have qualified their selected weight divisions for Olympic competition, their athletes had to place in the top four at the 1999 World Olympic Qualification Event, July 8-11, 1999, in Porec, Croatia, or in the top two at the 1999 Regional Olympic Qualifying Events. The 1999 Pan American Taekwondo Regional Olympic Qualification tournament was held October 2-3, 1999 in Miami, Florida. After the 1999 Pan American Games Team Trials (March 19-21, 1999), the U.S. selected the four weight divisions to try to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games (two men and two women). The weight divisions selected by the U.S. were: Women's Olympic Flyweight, Women's Olympic Welterweight, Men's Olympic Flyweight, and Men's Olympic Featherweight.

These four athletes competed in the World Olympic Qualifying Event and/or the Regional Olympic Qualifying Event. Kay Poe (Olympic Flyweight) won the gold medal at the World Olympic Qualifying Taekwondo Championships, thus qualifying her division for the U.S. Barbara Kunkel (Olympic Welterweight, Gold), Jason Torres (Olympic Flyweight, Gold), and Steven Lopez (Olympic Featherweight, Silver) qualified the three possible remaining weight divisions for the U.S. at the 1999 Pan American Taekwondo Regional Olympic Qualifying Tournament. These four athletes guaranteed the U.S. representation at the XXVII Olympic Games in the maximum four possible weight divisions.

The 2000 U.S. Olympic Taekwondo Team selection process will consist of two Olympic Team Trials Qualifying Tournaments and the 2000 United States Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials. The two Olympic Team Trials Qualifying Tournaments are open to any black belt who is a competitive member of the United States Taekwondo Union. The first Olympic Team Trials Qualifying Tournaments will be held January 21-23, 2000 and the second tournament is scheduled for March 10-12, 2000. Both of these tournaments will be held at the United States Olympic Complex in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The top two finishers in each division at each of these two single elimination tournaments will qualify for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials. Kay Poe, Barbara Kunkel, Jason Torres, and Steven Lopez have already qualified for the Olympic Trials by virtue of qualifying the U.S. for the 2000 Olympic Games in their respective weight divisions. The 2000 United States Olympic Taekwondo Team Trials will be May 12-14, 2000 .

The Olympic Trials will be a round robin format tournament between the five qualified athletes. At the completion of the round robin format the top two athletes will advance to the finals. In the finals the athlete who is in first place after the round robin must win against the athlete in second place once while the athlete in second place needs to win against the athlete in first place twice. The winner will represent the United States of America in Taekwondo at the XXVII Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia as a member of the 2000 United States Olympic Team.
